Alec McDougal—named for his father, Alexander— has traveled thousands of miles to escape his father’s legacy. But Alec’s going to learn there are some things that you can’t escape no matter how far you travel.

Even though Alec grew up under his father’s roof, Alec never really knew him. But when Alexander died, he left Alec a journal explaining why. Alec learns for the first time the great secret his father uncovered—magic—and the terrible secrets behind his father’s discovery McDougal the elder had come face to face with an evil he couldn’t understand and which he didn’t know how to fight; and so he did questionable things, dark things, in the name of good. And, still, he failed. Now, the father’s burden has become the son’s.

Alec is going to find that the only way for him to fight the impending chaos is to embrace the gift his father left behind—to become the magician he was always meant to be. Alec’s story unfolds as he delves deeper into his father’s history until that inevitable fateful moment when Alec is put to the same test his father faced so many years ago. Can Alec succeed where his father failed?

The Lives and Death of Alexander McDougal eBook Lon K Montag

Okay..."chaos"...got it.

This was an oddly intriguing book and occasionally depressing. Philosophical musings varied in their level of opaqueness and would probably not suit every reader's taste.

I experienced some confusion regarding timeline and outcome since the author flitted back and forth generationally but decided in the end it didn't really matter.

There was a weird relationship vibe between family members and also with friends/colleagues. The wife/mother was strangely wooden (and routinely referred to Alec as "Son"), and the relationship with Jess frankly seemed like an afterthought. Heaven only knows what "inheritance" the father really thought he was leaving.

The big build-up to the mystery of what happened at the university conference fell exceptionally flat, and the equally mysterious character of "the old man" never achieved its aim. The precipitous wrap-up left me scratching my head in kind of a "whaaaat" moment---just before a surreal magic-cum-superhero battle transpired.

There were a handful of typos: char for chair; at one point "phase" for "faze"; "if two guns go 'of' "; and "amount" used where "number" should have been plus an ungodly frequency of the verb smirk. The error that grated excessively, however, was the author's consistent misuse of "lie" and "lay." A refresher course on those two is definitely in order.

The author bounced around the universe a bit---at times we confronted philosophy and other times a creepiness and evil foreboding punctuated by remarkable supernatural powers---and then there were, of course, the metal spiders.

Because I enjoy exposure to the weirdness of people's creative minds, I decided on a four-star rating and would probably read another book by Mr. Montag.
